Frequently Asked Questions about the Denver Bid

Who is bidding?

A group of interested Colorado Fans got the ball rolling, but the bid effort is international in scope. Kent Bloognome is leading the bid, with assistance from Mary Morgnome, Brian Morgnome, Melissa Morgnome (only two of the three are related), and Jack Henegnome. More information on our bid committee is here.

Why are you bidding so late?

Denver 2008 is intentionally keeping its bid season short, running from Westercon "Due North", 2005 through LA Con IV, 2006. This shortened season is to prevent burn-out by the bidders and to save money. Site selection for 2008 will be held at LA Con IV.

Why 2008?

There are two main reasons for 2008. First, Denver is ready to host another Worldcon. Second, the facilities are priced at introductory rates after the recent renovation and it provides us an ideal opportunity to get them.

Where are the Bid Parties?

Bid parties will be held at regional conventions from Westercon 2005 through Worldcon 2006. Click here to see the current schedule of where we'll be. Information on the bid sites specifics will be available at the parties.

Why early August?

Denver 2008 is bidding for the first full week of August; the convention will run from Wednesday, August 6 through Sunday August 10. This is instead of the traditional Thursday-Monday Worldcon over Labor Day. The main reason for this is that the facilities are available at a good price at this time and they aren't available on Labor Day weekend. A second benefit is that the convention is scheduled before most schools start their fall semester. Since more schools have started the fall semester before Labor Day, more fans are unable to attend because of family constraints. Several other Worldcons have adjusted their schedules to a changing reality that Labor Day is no longer a dead weekend for the Convention/Hotel business.

Where are your hotels?

Denver 2008 is bidding the Colorado Convention Center in Downtown Denver. We are currently planning on using The Adam's Mark Hotel for out headquarters. There are also a large number of hotels within blocks of the convention center, with a new Hyatt adjacent to the Center.

Why Gnomes?

This is a very good question: why gnomes? Denver isn’t in the mountains, they are nearby. We don’t want anyone to confuse us with the Swiss bid that asks you to ‘Support the Geneva Convention.’ So, why gnomes? Personally, I think they are there to tip over the Buffalo.
